America
I both love it and think it so fucked up here!

Worked here in the early 90,s in Baltimore but fuck me has it changed, shocked at the amount of homeless you see, fucked up cunts on drugs and people down on their luck.

Contrast that with the extreme of wealth on display the glitz and glamour, the vibrant restaurants and bars.

Like 2 very different worlds here, like never before.

Fucked up IMO

Not sure where you were going in Baltimore during peak crack years not to see it back then - but yes, it’s still fucked up.

Re: America
The homeless and junkies have always been around no matter what city you go to, it’s just ballooned since my last visit 30 odd years ago.

It’s a very different society in the USA on the one hand they are all over you like a rash with false friendliness etc the shop sales people are the worst, tried on a jacket and sales bloke made me cringe with his talk of how stylish I looked, well over the top, then all the tipping shit, had forgotten about that malarkey.

But down on your luck or didn’t give enough tip or don’t want the fucking jacket and they are almost spitting poison at you.

But in many other ways it’s an interesting and fascinating place to visit but fuck living here.

Done 20+ hols to the US... East and West Coast... visited 10 states... as said before ...it has its great bits and its shit bits... seen some real depravation .... but is it any different to any major city, town, seaside resort in the UK...prob not?

In all must of spent 8 or 9 months out there... touristy bits and off the beaten trail... i can honestly say in all my time i did not run into one yank who i thought i wanted to punch their lights out... where as give me a couple of hours here! When they find out you are a Brit they seem geniunely curious and interested in you... find them extremely courteous, normally on same wave length humour wise, they like ribs and beer also met quite a few yank hammers in my time.. big thumbs up-from me.

Tipping is never a problem when exchange rates are good or even normal.... i imagine 18 per cent when its almost parity must be a real kick in the alberts...

Re: America
I have rules when it comes to tipping.

Efficient service that’s friendly and to the point, being what want to order then I give 20% If your a busy body cunt who wants to be my best friend or talk about how sad it was the Queen died or how they love Downton Abbey or cousin Billy Bob has been to London then it’s 10% for being an annoying cunt.

Re: America
Need to remember that America is not all (nor mostly) big cities and tourist attractions.

Its a lot like England.

Great people, frusterating people and even some awful people but mostly lots in between. Most just trying live their lives.

If you find everyone has to be fake (rather than actually) friendly with you, you might be the problem.

I kid a bit.

It is actually like you see on the TV there.

Strange really that for the so called greatest and richest nation on earth the infrastructure is 3rd world and has mass homelessness and junkies all over, or so I believe. A massively fucked up, divided nation.

I went to NYC once and loved it and would like to go other places at some point, not sure it will ever happen though.

Been to New York a few times,Chicago and New Orleans for Mardi Gras so only scratched the surface.Enjoyed my time spent there found the people alright some good some bad like anywhere else.
The best people I met were the blacks in New Orleans they were genuinely interested in our culture when they found out we came from London the racism there is shocking (15 years ago) nothing like here.
Wouldn’t go back as I can’t be arsed to sit on a plane for more than 3 hours

Re: America
Spend increasing amounts of time there between work and personal life and its a pretty fucked up place if you look at it as one country.
As others have said, the homelessness, racism and inequality is off the scale. I often wonder whether people who bleat on about it over here have ever been anywhere else, or whether they're just parroting what they see on social media and making a US problem our problem in the same way they did with BLM.

Against that, almost everywhere you go the people are unfailingly polite and have all the manners that we haven't had over here since the 90s.

It's also unclear to me how they became the world's super power. They are almost unbelievably dense and have about 20 people to do the job of one person over here. Totally incapable of thinking for themselves, everything requires a PROCESS, and no one ever makes any decisions because they're all terrified of getting sued. Partly why so many Brits do well there, if you're average here you're a rock star there. But even with that, the flipside is that because they have so many people to do so little, if you're a visitor then the service is great compared to here.

Can take or leave NYC - an awful lot of cunts there (not unlike london) - los Angeles is an absolute hellhole. Nashville is great, as is San Fran and if you can avoid the social issues Chicago is good.
Have come to think of it almost like 50 different countries tbh, the differences are so stark from place to place that its easier to get your head around.
All of that apart, as iyawns says, the majority are ordinary people just trying to live their lives.

Re: America
What made America an incredible place and the most successful economic story in history is the relationship defined between the state and the individual that gave people more freedom from government interference than they had ever enjoyed in other societies. The biggest flaw by far is that millions born/shipped there were denied citizenship and therefore denied the protection from state harm that citizenship would have given them.

Because of the individual freedom American citizens had, they also had a sense of individual responsibility. There was an understanding that you couldn't simultaneously claim you wanted freedom from an overbearing state yet demand that that state support you financially.

As a result, Americans worked, innovated, explored, pioneered and created.

Something fundamental shifted since the 60s though and it came about through a well intentioned desire to distribute wealth more equally but has created havoc. More people were encouraged to live on welfare and become dependent on the state therefore changing that dynamic from individual freedom/responsibility to state control/responsibility. It has snowballed from there and seen a stratospheric rise in homeless and economic disparity because the self sufficient have got wealthier and the state sufficient haven't.

Then you have schools. Their public school system has deteriorated rapidly since the 60s as it has become a vehicle for social engineering. Anyone who could scrape the money togeth for private education did, anyone who couldnt was left in a system that is not fit for purpose because education is a lower priority than pushing whatever positions the teaching unions think are important at the time.

Once you get to this situation where homeless and economic inequality caused by an interfering state has got so bad what do you do? Promote the idea that the only answer to the problems caused by a growing state with greater interference is a bigger state with even more interference.

Thomas Sowell put it best when he said, "Many on the political left are so entranced by the beauty of their vision that they cannot see the ugly reality they are creating in the real world."

I'm glad I went to Florida when I did (late 90s) and the people were great, but you couldn't pay me to visit the west coast and places like New York have long been run by left wing psychopaths, so I won't be going back any time soon
